Walk-By from the Pro (July 21st)

What an unbelievable month we have had in the world of golf.  We have had some big achievements already in the month of July.  We also have several club events just around the corner.

Rachel Heck

If you are unaware, Rachel Heck, 15, made waves at the U.S. Women’s Open last week.  As if it wasn’t remarkable enough to qualify for the tournament, she then proceeded to make the cut.  She played the weekend in even par, making 32 pars during the final two rounds.  She had the privilege of playing with Lexi Thompson on the last day.  Those of you that do not know the Heck family, they are the three girls that usually smiling, hanging out on the putting green or driving range in between their lengthy practice sessions. I had a chance to catch up with Rachel and ask her a couple of questions.

  • What is your favorite club in your bag?
    • 58-degree wedge
  • What age did you start playing golf?
    • 3 years old
  • What is your dream foursome?
    • Jordan Spieth, Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson (playing partner during the final round of the U.S. Women's Open)
  • What is your lowest career round?
    • 8-under par 64
  • Who is your role model?
    • Annika Sorenstam
  • What is your favorite hobby besides golf?
    • Deer hunting
  • Who is your favorite athlete/golfer?
    • Jordan Spieth

Rachel has committed to Stanford University and will enroll in the fall of 2020.  Rachel’s sister, Abby, will play at the University of Notre Dame this fall.  What an honor to have this great group of girls at Spring Creek Ranch. The youngest, Anna, is entering the seventh grade.

MGA Amateur

Two weeks ago, we co-hosted the MGA Amateur along with Germantown Country Club and Memphis Country Club.  Our very own, Ben Fisher, come from behind on Sunday, at Memphis Country Club, to grab the title.  Ben shot three straight rounds of 1-over to win by one stroke over another SCR member, Buzz Fly.

Mini-Dylan Cup

On July 5th, we had our Mini-Dylan Cup.  This is our junior club championship for juniors under the age of 14.  Jackson Whaley held off Austin Bibb with a 41 to win by two strokes.  Congratulations to all!

The Meyer Cup: Men's Club Championship

The Meyer Cup, our Men’s Club Championship, will have qualifying for the Championship Flight on July 29th and August 5th.  Tee times for the qualifiers will begin in the afternoon on those Saturdays. Spots will be divided between the two qualifiers based on participation.  The top 15 qualifiers and the defending champion, Keith Schmitt, will move on to match play tournament held from August 11th through 13th.  If you want to play in one of the flighted divisions, you do not have to qualify.

The Bloodline: Parent-Junior Championship

Our Parent-Junior Championship, the Bloodline, will be held on Sunday, July 30th.  Teams will play 9 or 18 holes depending on age and skill level.  Dinner will be included.

Twilight Golf

We have a new event we are trying this year.  Twilight Golf will begin next Friday afternoon and will continue through the fall. The format will be a 4-person scramble with at least one lady on each team.  Couples are encouraged to pair up.  Guests may play for $35 plus cart.  This tournament will work in conjunction with Buckets Night, although it is not mandatory to attend both.

Please call the Golf Shop to inquire or sign up for any of the upcoming tournaments!

As we all know, the heat has become unbearable recently.  Be sure to stay hydrated and cool while enjoying the Ranch.  We have ice towels on the practice facilities and comfort stations for your convenience.  Please don’t hesitate to call us to retrieve your favorite beverage at 901-853-5662.

With the extreme temperatures, practicing can be difficult.  For me, this is a good excuse to spend more time on the short game.  It doesn’t take as much effort, and you can stay a little cooler.

Thanks for checking in and come see us!

Keep the birdies rolling,

Matthew Brock, PGA
